Bob Dylan
1965
The pioneering music video, one of the first of its kind, was filmed in this alley behind the Savoy Hotel on May 8, 1965. Dylan holds cards with the song's lyrics, turning them one by one as the music plays. The idea was his own, and the cards were handwritten by Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Neuwirth, and Donovan, full of deliberate errors and puns. In the background, Allen Ginsberg appears throughout, talking to Bob Neuwirth, without any concern about staying out of frame. Filmed in a single continuous take, the clip was created as the opening for the documentary *Dont Look Back* and became such a significant reference that it inspired tributes from INXS and "Weird Al" Yankovic decades later.
