The Story
412 Broadway was a music venue that operated under several different names. In 1965, the Grateful Dead, then still known as the Warlocks, recorded a demo here. In 1973, as The Matrix, Bob Marley and the Wailers played four nights here before they achieved any fame. The Stone opened in 1980 and hosted acts such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Prince throughout the decade. Metallica played their first show with Cliff Burton in San Francisco on this stage on March 5, 1983. That same night, Exodus opened for Metallica, and this show is considered the founding event of Bay Area Thrash. Shows at The Stone stopped in 1993, but the venue only permanently closed around 1995. The address is now an adult entertainment establishment.
