The Story

412 Broadway was a venue for many different shows and went by several names. In 1965, the Grateful Dead, still called the Warlocks, recorded a demo here. In 1973, as The Matrix, Bob Marley and the Wailers played four nights here before any success. The Stone opened in 1980 with Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker on the same bill. Prince played here in the 80s. Metallica played their first San Francisco show with Cliff Burton on this stage. In 1983, Exodus opened for Metallica, and this show is considered the founding event of Bay Area Thrash. The Stone closed in 1995. The address is now an adult entertainment establishment.
