The Story

This theater was inaugurated in 1950, named Teatro de Emergência, and for over two decades was the main cultural venue in Belo Horizonte before the Palácio das Artes. MPB stars such as Elis Regina, Cartola, Chico Buarque, Rita Lee, Clara Nunes, and Vinicius de Moraes performed there. Its current name is a tribute to the Minas Gerais maestro Francisco Nunes. It underwent a major renovation in 1980 and closed again in 2009, reopening in 2014 with 525 seats, retaining the characteristic wavy ceiling of the original facade.
