The Story

Opened in 1978 on Oranienstraße, in Kreuzberg, SO36 (Südost 36) was Berlin’s CBGB, a former cinema converted into a punk and New Wave hotspot. In 1979, artist Martin Kippenberger took over management and blended the club with the visual arts scene. Einstürzende Neubauten played there in November 1982, in a show that became a legendary bootleg among fans. Bowie and Iggy Pop also graced the stage during the club's punk phase. In 2025, it was recognized with the Applaus Award in the Inclusion category. Still active.
