Sepultura Bestial Devastation

The Story

The iconic cover of Sepultura's debut is an original painting by Sérgio "Destroyer" Oliveira, bassist of Chakal, showing a winged demon emerging behind an imaginary Gothic cathedral. The Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem Church, in the center of Belo Horizonte, was used as a backdrop for Sepultura's initial promotional photos, taken by Vanda Guimarães in 1985 and used on the back cover. In 2025, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the image, the band The Troops of Doom, the current project of original guitarist Jairo "Tormentor" Guedz, recreated the exact pose in the same style, with photography by Maycon Avelino, in a direct homage between the past and present of Brazilian metal.
