Madonna, Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Cher, Beyoncé
1978-2007
This nightclub opened in 1978 in Chelsea, occupying an old warehouse. From 1982 onwards, it became one of New York's first major hip-hop clubs, with performances by Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash, and then became one of the most important temples of the city's gay nightlife. On February 14, 1998, Madonna performed there in a three-song mini-show promoting the album Ray of Light, her first club show in fourteen years. In November 2005, she made a surprise appearance alongside producer Stuart Price to promote Confessions on a Dance Floor. Cher, Bette Midler, and Beyoncé also graced the stage over the years. The Roxy permanently closed in 2007.
