Praça Onze

Samba, Carnaval

1932

The Story

Praça Onze was the heart of the first official samba school parade in 1932. In 1941, the city government began demolishing the square to build what is now Avenida Presidente Vargas, displacing hundreds of families and erasing the birthplace of Carnival. The Terreirão do Samba now occupies part of the original land.
