The Story

A rock formation in the Saúde neighborhood, where enslaved, freed, and runaway Africans settled in the early 19th century and built the community that would give rise to Rio's urban samba. Tia Ciata hosted gatherings here, where musicians played samba. The site was landmarked in 1984. Samba de roda still takes place here. Rua Tia Ciata is decorated with wall art featuring several important names in Brazilian music.
