AC/DC, Metallica, Dead Kennedys, U2, Blondie, Journey, R.E.M., Jerry Garcia
1976
Opened in 1976 on the second floor of a building in the Embarcadero Center, the Old Waldorf was San Francisco's most important rock club between the end of the original Fillmore and the Bill Graham era of the 1980s. It was the first club in the Bay Area to hold two sessions per night, at 8 pm and 11 pm. On September 3, 1977, AC/DC played here during their first US tour, with Bon Scott and Angus Young. The show was recorded by radio and is one of the band's most legendary live recordings. In seven years, the club hosted U2, Metallica, Exodus, Dead Kennedys, Blondie, Devo, Dire Straits, Iggy Pop, R.E.M. and Jerry Garcia. In 1980, Bill Graham bought the club and closed it in 1983 to open Wolfgang's. The space is now the Punch Line Comedy Club.
