The Story

This Art Deco cinema opened on August 29, 1938, as the Apollo Cine-Variety Theatre, becoming a full-time music venue in the 70s. On November 20, 1963, The Beatles played here, in a show filmed in color that would become a short documentary. The venue appears in scenes from the movie 24 Hour Party People, documenting shows by New Order and Happy Mondays. Arctic Monkeys also filmed their DVD Live at the Apollo here in December 2007. Morrissey celebrated his 50th birthday with a concert at the venue, opening the night with "This Charming Man." Prince, Bob Dylan, Oasis, and Stone Roses also graced the stage over the decades. With 3,500 seats, the building has been Grade II listed since 1994. Still active.
