Nirvana, Kurt Cobain
1991
This pool opened in 1990 and was where photographer Kirk Weddle captured, in 1991, the image that became the cover of Nirvana's album Nevermind. A four-month-old baby swimming underwater towards a dollar bill attached to a fishhook. The idea came from Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl after watching a documentary about water births. The baby in the photo was one of several children of the photographer's acquaintances brought to the pool that day, with the parents receiving 200 dollars for the session. The pool remains active, home to the Rose Bowl Aquatics swimming club and host to diving events scheduled for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
