Marlene Dietrich

Marlene Dietrich was a legendary German-American actress and singer. She passed away in Paris in May 1992 and was buried here as she had requested, near her mother, in the district where she was born. Thousands of Berliners lined the streets as her coffin passed, throwing flowers from balconies. She is in Section 34. Photographer Helmut Newton is buried a few graves away. Berlin refused to name a street after her in 1996. The city officially apologized in 2001 and named her an honorary citizen in 2002.
