Joe Strummer, The Clash

· 1970s

The Story

The address in Regent's Park where Joe Strummer lived before forming The Clash. He grew up as the son of a diplomat. Born John Graham Mellor in Ankara, he spent his childhood between Egypt, Mexico, and a British boarding school. The tension between this privileged background and the punk identity he constructed was one of the creative forces that propelled The Clash. It is one of the less-discussed addresses in punk history, but it deserves a visit.
