The Story

The address in Regent's Park where Joe Strummer lived for a time, at the home of designer Sebastian Conran, shortly before The Clash recorded the album London Calling. He grew up as the son of a diplomat. Born John Graham Mellor in Ankara, he spent his childhood between Cyprus, Egypt, Mexico, and Germany, and a British boarding school. The tension between this privileged background and his punk identity was one of the creative forces that propelled The Clash. It is one of the lesser-known addresses in punk history, but it deserves a visit.
