Jazz Record Center

1983

The Story

This store opened in 1983, when Fred Cohen took over the business after the owner of Jolly Roger, a jazz store on Columbus Avenue where he was a frequent customer, offered him the spot. It moved to the eighth floor of a commercial building on West 26th Street in 1992, with no sign on the street. Fred Cohen wrote the reference guide for identifying original Blue Note pressings, and the store gathers rarities from the label alongside photos, posters, books, and memorabilia from jazz history. It remains active.
