Ian Curtis, Joy Division

Ian Curtis was born in Stretford in 1956 and grew up in Macclesfield. After seeing the Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in 1976, he helped form Joy Division with Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris. He died in May 1980, aged 23. His ashes are buried here, under a stone with the epitaph chosen by his wife Deborah: "Love Will Tear Us Apart." In 2026, Joy Division–New Order was announced as an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with the ceremony scheduled for November.
