Great American Music Hall

Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead, Journey

1907

The Story

Opened in 1907 after the 1906 earthquake, it was originally a restaurant, casino, and brothel before becoming a burlesque house, then a jazz club, and finally a music venue in 1972. Ornate columns, wraparound balconies, and frescoed ceilings make it one of San Francisco's most beautiful small music halls. Journey debuted here in February 1974, still in their original instrumental lineup. Jerry Garcia played here 30 times. Still active.
