George Michael, Wham!
2020
This nine-meter high mural, titled George Michael TV Outside, is located on the side wall of a building on Kingsbury Road, very close to the subway station. Painted by British artist Dawn Mellor in September 2020, it celebrates the singer as a pioneering cultural figure and LGBTQ+ icon. It features scenes from different phases of his career, including his silhouette from the "Careless Whisper" video, references to the "Outside" video, and a scene of him drying his hair backstage during Wham!'s 1985 world tour. Kingsbury was where George Michael spent most of his childhood, living with his family and studying at Roe Green Junior School and Kingsbury High School before moving to Hertfordshire in his teens, where he met Andrew Ridgeley and formed Wham!. The artwork also pays homage to John Logie Baird, who experimented with television in Kingsbury in the 1920s.
