The Story

A landmark in downtown São Paulo since 1963, when it opened under the name Centro Comercial Grandes Galerias, which is still its official name today. In the 1970s, textile shops and tailors began to give way to the first record stores, among them the legendary Wop Bop, opened in 1976 by the vocalist of Olho Seco. The nickname "Galeria do Rock" (Rock Gallery) was born from this and never left, becoming the name by which the building is known worldwide, even though it was never officially changed. Seven floors of record stores, band t-shirts, instruments, and tattoo studios, listed as a historical heritage site of the city, through which generations of metalheads, punks, skateboarders, and collectors have passed, and even fans like Kurt Cobain and Bruce Dickinson, who visited it when they were in São Paulo. Today it is considered, by the Guinness Book, the largest concentration of rock-related establishments in the world.
