Casa dos Mutantes

Mutantes, Rita Lee

1948

The Story

The mansion on Rua Venâncio Aires, in the industrial neighborhood of Pompeia, was where Arnaldo and Sérgio Dias Baptista grew up. Their mother, Clarisse, who was a classical pianist, taught them music theory from childhood. Their father, César, was a poet, journalist, and amateur opera singer. In 1966, the two brothers and their neighbor Rita Lee formed Os Mutantes in that very house, the most visionary Brazilian rock band of its time and one of the most influential in the world. Kurt Cobain even wrote a letter to Arnaldo in 1993, declaring his admiration.
