Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The Story

This street, between Bleecker and West 4th Street, is where photographer Don Hunstein captured the cover photo for *The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan* on a cold February day in 1963. Bob Dylan and his girlfriend Suze Rotolo lived nearby, and the scene was decided without prior planning. The photographer asked the couple to walk back and forth across the street a few times. Years later, Suze publicly advocated for Jones Street to be landmarked as a historic district of Greenwich Village. Today, the street is a popular spot for fans who recreate the album cover pose.
