Exil Bar / Horváth

David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Klaus Schulze

1972

The Story

This restaurant operated as Exil starting in 1972, founded by Oswald Wiener and Michel Würthle, becoming a hub for West Berlin's art scene. David Bowie and photographer Helmut Newton passed through here. Wiener and Würthle managed the space until 1985, but the restaurant continued operating under the same name with new management until it finally closed in 1996. Since 2014, the Michelin-starred Horváth restaurant has been operating at the same address, preserving a mural by artist Jim Avignon, painted in 2004 and rediscovered during a 2021 renovation.
