Estátua Geraldo Filme

Geraldo Filme

2022

The Story

This statue was sculpted by Newton Santanna and inaugurated on April 21, 2022, honoring Geraldo Filme, also known as Geraldão da Barra Funda. A fundamental samba musician and composer in the rescue of the Black roots of São Paulo samba, Geraldo composed for the Peruche and Vai-Vai samba schools, wrote the anthem for Bixiga Tradição, and recorded four albums throughout his life, including O Canto dos Escravos, from 1982, alongside Clementina de Jesus and Tia Doca. He founded the Unidos do Peruche Samba School. Praça David Raw was chosen because it is near the old Largo da Banana, a historic samba spot in São Paulo that Geraldo frequented, now next to the Latin America Memorial.
