A singer and songwriter from Bahia who arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 1938 wanting to study law and ended up inventing a part of Brazilian music. Rosa Morena, Maracangalha, O Que É Que a Baiana Tem, Samba da Minha Terra, are some of his classics. He wrote 400 songs. He died on August 16, 2008, at the age of 94.
