The Story

Carmen Miranda was born in Portugal in 1909 and arrived in Rio at ten months old. She became the queen of radio and samba in the 1930s, was discovered at the Urca Casino by an American producer in 1939 and left for Broadway. She returned to Brazil the following year but was booed for being seen as "Americanized." It was such a painful experience that she would only return to the country 14 years later, in 1954. She died in Beverly Hills in 1955, aged 46. The Carmen Miranda Museum in Flamengo Park, which we also have here in the App, is worth a visit.
