The Beatles
1959
A legendary club founded by Mona Best, mother of The Beatles' first drummer, Pete Best. The Quarrymen, formed that night by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ken Brown, played on the club's opening night in the basement on August 29, 1959. They would go on to play there dozens of times, and as The Beatles, with Ringo Starr, nearly 300 times in total. A silhouette of Lennon painted by his then-girlfriend Cynthia Powell is still visible on the wall. It closed in 1962 and is a Grade II listed building.
