The Beatles
Est. 1959
Legendary Club founded by Mona Best, mother of early Beatles drummer Pete Best. The Quarrymen formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, played the opening night of this basement club on 29 August 1959. So closely involved that they helped paint the walls and ceiling, they played here 44 times before becoming the Beatles. A silhouette of Lennon painted by his then-girlfriend Cynthia Powell is still visible on the wall. The cellar has barely changed since it closed in 1962 and is Grade II listed.
