The Story

The cover photo for one of Bowie's most important albums was taken on Heddon Street, a small alley near Carnaby Street, in central London, on a cold and rainy January night in 1972. The photo location is marked with a commemorative plaque installed in 2012, one of London's rare plaques dedicated to a fictional character, and not a real person. The phone booth that appears on the original back cover no longer exists. It was removed decades ago and replaced by a more modern model, to the dismay of Bowie himself, who complained about the loss during a visit to the site in 1990.
