Beatles Abbey Road Crossing

The Story

This is the most famous crosswalk in the world in front of Abbey Road Studios in St John's Wood. It was immortalized on the cover of The Beatles' Abbey Road album on August 8, 1969, with the four crossing the street. The entire session lasted only 10 minutes, with a single policeman holding up traffic while photographer Iain Macmillan, standing on a ladder, took only 6 photos and the fifth was chosen. Paul McCartney appears barefoot and out of step, a detail that, along with the "28IF" license plate of the white Beetle in the background, fueled the famous theory that he had died and been replaced. One of the most reproduced images in music history, and the only original Beatles cover not to feature the band's or album's name written. The crosswalk has been a listed site since 2010 and is visited by thousands of fans every day.
