Apartamento Elis Regina

The Story

This apartment in Jardins was where Elis Regina spent her last years, moving there in the early 80s with her children João Marcello, Pedro Mariano, and Maria Rita, and her boyfriend, pianist and lawyer Samuel Mac Dowell. The space was a meeting point for musician friends and received constant visitors as Elis prepared to record her next album. She died there on January 19, 1982, at the age of 36, prematurely ending the career of one of the greatest voices in Brazilian popular music. In 2002, to mark the 20th anniversary of her passing, an ironwood tree was planted on the sidewalk in front of the building, with a small metal plaque on the ground in her honor.
