The Story

This is one of London's most versatile music venues. Since October 24, 1942, it has been a jazz club, an air raid shelter during World War II, a stage for American blues, the home of Northern Soul, the birthplace of British punk, and a venue for secret shows by big names. The same stage installed in 1964 is still there. Howlin' Wolf, Rolling Stones, The Clash, Amy Winehouse, and Metallica all played on it at different times. On September 20 and 21, 1976, the 100 Club hosted the first punk festival in history with Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Buzzcocks, The Damned, and Subway Sect. Blur, Oasis, Suede, Damon Albarn, and Gorillaz have played shows here over the years. In 2011, threatened with closure due to rising rent, it was saved with the vocal support of Mick Jagger and Liam Gallagher.
