The cover was photographed at what is now Brooklyn Bridge Park, with the Brooklyn Bridge visible in the background. The album was recorded and mixed at Systems Two studio in Brooklyn, NY. Written after a series of deaths in Peter Steele's family, it is considered the band's darkest record. The green-tinted bridge photograph became one of the most recognised images in gothic metal. The exact spot near Jane's Carousel on the DUMBO waterfront still looks virtually identical today.
