The Story

The stretch of West 28th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue where American popular music was invented. Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern published their works here. The name came from the strident sound of pianos playing in all the open windows at once. A historical landmark now commemorates the site.
