The Story

This pub was built in 1803, about a hundred meters from where it is today, and moved brick by brick to its current address on Fairfield Street in 1877, when the railway expanded. It closed in 1987, after the closure of the nearby Mayfield station, and stood empty for years until reopening as a music venue in 1991, becoming one of Manchester's last genuinely underground strongholds. The upstairs is entirely dedicated to punk, indie, and metal shows. Status Quo has played on its stage, among many other names from the alternative scene. The venue has been a Grade II listed building since 1988. It remains active as one of the most important venues in the city's alternative music scene. The Ian Curtis mural is located in the same building.
