The Music Building

Madonna, Billy Idol, Joey Ramone, The Strokes

The Story

Located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, this 12-story commercial building was transformed into a legendary rehearsal and studio complex in the late 1970s. It was here that a young Madonna lived for periods in the early 1980s, rehearsing with the Breakfast Club and creating with Stephen Bray the first demos that would change her career. Here, Billy Idol composed tracks like "Rebel Yell," Joey Ramone frequented for decades, and years later, the members of The Strokes shaped the band's raw sound. Bravely resisting real estate speculation and the gentrification of Manhattan, the Music Building continues to operate in the heart of New York City.
