The Story

This former music venue was founded by Marty Balin in an old pizzeria transformed into The Matrix club. On opening night, August 13, 1965, this band chose the name Jefferson Airplane and the venue became the band's home. In its early years, The Matrix also hosted Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Charlatans, and Steve Miller, becoming one of the cradles of San Francisco's psychedelic scene. In 1967, it hosted two nights of recording by The Doors that resulted in the live album *Live at the Matrix 1967*, played almost without an audience in the hundred-seat room. It closed in 1972. Today, the White Rabbit Bar exists there, named after the Jefferson Airplane song.
