The Blue Angel Club

The Beatles, Pete Best

1960

The Story

This building, where doctor William Henry Duncan was born in 1805, became a nightclub in 1960. In May 1960, the band still called Silver Beetles auditioned here, which led to their first tour outside Liverpool as the backing band for singer Johnny Gentle in Scotland. It was also here that Pete Best auditioned and became the band's drummer in August 1960. Years later, Cilla Black sang Bye Bye Blackbird at the Blue Angel, and Brian Epstein decided to sign her, making her his only female client. Still known locally as The Raz, the club remains active and very popular among students.
