Sister Ray was founded in 1989 by Neil Brown, who sold vinyl from a stall in Camden before opening a physical store on Berwick Street in Soho. The name comes from The Velvet Underground's song "Sister Ray," 17 minutes of noise rock recorded in 1967. Berwick Street was London's "Golden Mile" for records in the 90s. Daddy Kool, Shades, Red, Black Market, and Vinyl Junkies were neighbors. In 1995, Oasis famously photographed the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album cover essentially in front of the store. In 2003, the store merged with Selectadisc at number 34. Today, it is located at 75 Berwick Street. Sister Ray is the largest independent record store in the West End and one of the country's leading specialists in used vinyl.
