Night & Day Café

Elbow, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, Kasabian, Johnny Marr

1991

The Story

This bar opened in 1991 in a traditional fish and chips shop, bought by Jan Oldenburg. Gradually, it became a music venue and a meeting point for the city's entire creative scene. Guy Garvey, from Elbow, used to say he gave the Night & Day's phone number as his personal contact because of how much time the band spent there, even before it had a fixed stage. Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Manic Street Preachers, and Paolo Nutini played on the narrow stage at the back of the hall. It appeared in the series Lost as the bar where the fictional band Drive Shaft, fronted by character Charlie, played its first show. It faced recurrent threats of closure due to noise complaints over the years, the most recent resolved in court in March 2024. Still active, with an eclectic program ranging from traditional jazz to rap.
