Matt & Phreds Jazz Club

The Story

No one can say for sure what year musicians Matt and Phred decided to open this jazz club in the Northern Quarter, but the venue has become the city's premier live jazz spot. In 2010, after the original founders went their separate ways, the Turner family took over the business and kept the intimate atmosphere alive, programming jazz, funk, folk, swing, and ska. Wynton Marsalis, Jamie Cullum, Adele, and members of the Small Faces have all performed on its small stage. The club helped mark the cultural revival of the Northern Quarter, becoming a symbol of Manchester's renewed urban identity. Still active, with artisan pizza and happy hour.
