The Story

This 1936 mansion in Bixiga opened its doors on October 21, 1983, as the Restaurante Cultural Madame Satã, founded by Miriam Dutra, Márcia Dutra, Wilson José, and Williams Jorge, four friends passionate about amateur theater. In 1984, José Claudio Mendes joined as a partner and brought the concept of a dance floor and a small stage. The dark basement became the most important spot for post-punk, gothic, and new wave in Brazil, hosting no less than 79 bands between 1984 and 1986, including RPM, Titãs, Ira!, Legião Urbana, Inocentes, Fellini, and Camisa de Vênus. Cazuza, Claudia Wonder, and Rita Lee were among its regulars. The peaceful coexistence between punks, goths, gays, intellectuals, and socialites on the same dance floor defied the norm of any other place in the city at the time. The venue closed in 2009 and reopened in 2012 as Madame Club, now listed as a city heritage site. Still active.
