The Story

This store was founded in 1955 by saxophonist Johnny Roadhouse, becoming an essential landmark in Manchester's music scene for almost seventy years. Paul McCartney even rented an instrument that is now on display in the store. In the 90s, Noel Gallagher bought the famous Mesa/Boogie amplifier, which belonged to Johnny Marr, at Johnny Roadhouse, and it helped define the raw sound of Oasis' early albums. Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, and Happy Mondays were also frequent customers. In 2006, the store's facade was immortalized in the animated music video for Oasis' "The Masterplan." Johnny Roadhouse passed away in 2009 at the age of 88, and the business continued under his family's management. The store remains active to this day.
