Iron Door Club

The Story

This club opened in April 1960 in a former butter-packaging factory, founded by Geoff Hogarth and Harry Ormesher, with an initial capacity of 1,650 people. It was here, on May 15, 1960, that The Beatles performed as the Silver Beetles, after having debuted as the Silver Beats the previous night at Lathom Hall. The Searchers were also a regular presence at the venue, and live recordings from 1963 would be released decades later on the album The Iron Door Sessions. The club closed in 1964 and the original building was demolished, making way for commercial offices. A plaque on the wall still commemorates the space's former use.
