Hessy Music Centre

The Beatles, Merseybeat

1950s

The Story

The instrument shop where virtually all Merseybeat musicians bought their first guitars or amplifiers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Owner Frank Hessy sold a guitar on a payment plan to a young John Lennon. Aunt Mimi signed the agreement as guarantor and unknowingly changed music history. A blue plaque marks the spot on Stanley Street. The shop itself has long ceased to exist.
