Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, Guns N' Roses, Slash, HAIM, Fiona Apple
1931–
The 24-hour restaurant/deli on Fairfax Avenue was where musicians went after shows or recording sessions. Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, and Lenny Bruce were regulars. The Kibitz Room bar, in the back, open since 1961 in a former candy store, hosted impromptu performances by names like Fiona Apple, Lenny Kravitz, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was at a Kibitz table that Guns N' Roses was formed. Guitarist Slash was a childhood friend of Marc Canter, one of the owners, and the place became the band's informal headquarters in the days when they barely had money to eat. Marc photographed the group's first 50 shows, material that resulted in the book *Reckless Road* and part of the liner notes for *Appetite for Destruction*. Recently, the cover of HAIM's album *Women in Music Pt. III* was photographed inside the diner by Oscar-winning director Paul Thomas Anderson.
