Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, Crosby Stills Nash Young
1960s–1970s
The hilly neighborhood between Hollywood and San Fernando Valley that, in the 1960s and 70s, became the most densely creative community in American music. Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, Crosby Stills Nash Young, Frank Zappa and dozens of others lived within a few blocks of one another, in a creative ecosystem that spawned some of the best pop music in history. The Canyon Country Store, a historic 1929 grocery store with a porch cafe, was once a hangout for those same rock stars. It’s worth a visit just to begin exploring the area.
