Concert venue that was Fillmore's main rival and was managed by Chet Helms, Janis Joplin's oldest and most loyal supporter, who went to Texas twice to bring her back to San Francisco. Janis Joplin preferred to perform at the Avalon, telling a reporter that the Fillmore audience wasn't really there for the music. Janis Joplin's first show while still with Big Brother and the Holding Company was here. The building still exists, but it is no longer a concert hall.
