The Story

Opened in 1976 on the second floor of a building in the Embarcadero Center, the Old Waldorf was San Francisco's most important rock club between the end of the original Fillmore and the 1980s Bill Graham era. It was the first club in the Bay Area to have two sessions per night, at 8 pm and 11 pm. On September 3, 1977, AC/DC played here on their second visit to the United States, with Bon Scott and Angus Young. The show was recorded by KSGA-FM radio and is one of the band's most legendary live recordings. In seven years, U2, Metallica, Exodus, Dead Kennedys, Blondie, Devo, Dire Straits, Iggy Pop, R.E.M., and Jerry Garcia passed through the club. In 1980, Bill Graham bought the club and closed it in 1983 to open Wolfgang's. The space is now the Punch Line Comedy Club.
