Estúdio Eldorado

The Story

This studio operated in the same building that housed the headquarters of the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo and Rádio Eldorado, on Rua Major Quedinho, in the Historic Center. Created in January 1972 to take advantage of Rádio Eldorado's modern auditorium, it was a technical revolution in the Brazilian phonographic market. At a time when only two studios in the country had eight-channel equipment, Eldorado debuted with sixteen. It had a separate tile-lined room where echo and reverb were created manually, with the sound leaving the studio, entering the tiled room, reflecting off the walls, and returning captured by a second microphone overhead. Every afternoon, for years, until he fell ill and died, the composer Adoniran Barbosa would go there to take a nap on a sofa, never bothered, even though he was not an employee of the house. Caetano Veloso, Rita Lee, Tim Maia, Roberto Carlos, and Hermeto Pascoal recorded here in the 1970s and 1980s.
