Duke Ellington
· 1974
Jazz Musician and Composer. One of the most celebrated figures in American music history, Ellington led his orchestra for over five decades and composed over 1,000 works. He chose his burial site in Woodlawn in the 1950s, near the grave of singer Florence Mills, whom he immortalized in the song "Black Beauty." His burial in 1974 gave rise to what became the famous Jazz Corner, as musicians requested to be buried alongside him. Miles Davis is right next door.
