The Story

The bronze statue created by sculptor Robert Graham was inaugurated in 1997 at Duke Ellington Circle, on the northeast corner of Central Park. It was the first monument in New York dedicated to an African-American. Bobby Short, a pianist and admirer of Ellington, spent 18 years raising funds for this memorial.
